Kauai Cigar Company has been producing cigars since 2006. The tobacco is Kauai grown on state leased land and is certified organic. In the past, rolling and packaging was done in Nicaragua. With the assistance of this grant the company is developing a new cigar product, the Grand Alli, which is 100% Kauai grown and made. Kauai Cigar Company plans to manufacture/distribute 8,000 plus of these cigars. The Company projects the gross revenue for this limited release cigar to generate $80,000 in wholesale sales and $80,000 for the cigar retailers with an additional $40,000 for the State of Hawaii in wholesale tobacco tax dollars.
With the success of the current brands and the pending demand for the Grand Alii cigars, the labor needs for the 2009 tobacco crop harvest has grown from 15 to 40 seasonal workers.
