Kailani Farms is a small organic family farm working on approximately 40 acres, located in Kilauea and Moloaa. Primary crops are lettuce and ginger. The lettuce has been marketed to local markets, restaurants, stores and hotels. With the KADP grant award, Kailani Farms has been able to successfully launch a new product line, ready to eat organic bagged greens. This new product is now available in several of the larger grocery stores around the Island (with an increased demand for additional bags on the rise). The grant enabled the operation to increase production and create a new product line when the economic downturn closed hotels and restaurants that were previously serviced.

Production was increased by upgrading their greenhouse nursery with the purchase of new seedling tables. Bird-proof fencing was installed in the lettuce fields where a majority of the lettuce crop was being eaten by the birds, including the endangered Nene. The fencing is low-voltage electric fence that is low to the ground, and relatively easy to move. The low voltage doesn’t harm the birds but rather deters them from landing in the area of young salad greens. The grant assisted in the creation of the new product line by funding the new logo design and purchasing the bags imprinted with it.
